Why my viral reel makes me sad :(

In December, I shared a reel that unexpectedly went viral. In it, I demonstrated how simple actions—like saying "Hi," standing up, or inviting people to try on jewelry—could unintentionally scare customers away. I didn’t expect it to ignite such strong opinions, and I have to admit, reading the comments left me feeling a bit sad. The comments seemed to suggest that many shoppers don’t want to be engaged and prefer not to feel pressured, which I totally understand. However, I still believe that socializing at markets and art shows is key to creating connections.

As an introvert, I totally understand the need for space and quiet time. After a day at a market, I usually go home and take a nap to recharge. But even though these events can be exhausting for me, I still believe the socialization is important. It’s not just about making a sale—it’s about creating authentic connections. In fact, many of the friendships I’ve made in Flagstaff have come from these market interactions. While online shopping is convenient, markets offer a unique opportunity to meet the artist, learn about the creative process, and form a deeper connection with both the piece of art and the artist behind it.

Socializing at markets creates a sense of community. As a vendor, I love hearing about what brings people to my booth, why they’re drawn to a particular piece, or what it means to them. It’s about building relationships, not just making transactions. The human element of sharing a smile or a story can make an experience far more memorable than just the product you’re purchasing.

While it's important to respect personal space and not pressure anyone into buying, we shouldn’t underestimate the value of a brief, friendly interaction. It adds a personal touch and can even change someone's day. So, while I know my approach may be unpopular, I stand by the belief that markets are not just about products—they’re about people and the connections we make along the way. Let's keep the spirit of conversation and connection alive!
