Tucson's A Gem: Your guide to attending the Tucson Gem Show for the first time!
YAY, you’re heading to the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show for the first time! As exciting as it is, preparing for this massive event can feel overwhelming at first. But don’t worry—I’ve been there, and I’m here to share my tips and insights to help make your first trip an organized and enjoyable success.
Whether you’re a jewelry maker, gemstone enthusiast, or just someone who loves unique finds, Tucson offers something for everyone. In this guide, I’ll break down how to prepare, navigate the shows, and make the most of your experience.
Tucson Gem and Mineral Show encompasses numerous shows happening all over the city during the end January and through February. These shows are where you’ll find everything from raw gemstones and cabochons from all over the world to finished jewelry and tools. Most of these shows are free to enter, and many cater specifically to jewelers and makers looking for high-quality materials.
Do your Research Before the Show
The first step to navigating the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show is knowing which shows to prioritize. With dozens of events happening simultaneously, it’s impossible to see everything. Here are my top tips:
- Research ahead of time: Use online schedules to identify the shows that interest you most. Popular ones include the GIGM Shows, GL&W Holidome, Kino,AGTA GemFair, JG&M Expo, and JOGS. To shop effectively, you’ll need to research which shows align with your goals and plan your schedule accordingly. This link is the best resource I’ve found for learning about the different shows and planning my trip.
- Plan your route: Many shows are clustered in specific areas, making it easy to visit multiple locations in one day.
- Some shows are open to the public and others are wholesale only. Use the link above to make sure you are prepared with your TPT and EIN if you want to attend the wholesale shows.
- Set a budget: It’s easy to get carried away when you’re surrounded by so many beautiful things. Decide ahead of time how much you’re willing to spend and stick to it.
Navigating the Shows & Shopping Tips
Shopping at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show can be thrilling, but it’s important to stay focused. Here’s how to shop smart:
- Arrive early: Mornings are often less crowded, giving you better access to vendors and a more relaxed shopping experience.
- Bring cash: While many vendors accept credit cards, cash can sometimes help you negotiate a better deal.
- Network with Vendors: Building relationships can lead to better deals and insider tips. Don’t be afraid to ask vendors about the origin, quality, and care of their materials. The more informed you are, the better your purchasing decisions will be.
- Keep track of vendors: If you’re considering a big purchase but want to shop around first, make a note of the booth number and vendor name so you can easily return later.
- Bring Snacks & Stay Hydrated: There is so much to see it is sometimes hard to remember to fuel yourself. You might not have time for a proper lunch, so bring plenty of water and snacks. Tucson can be warm, and staying hydrated is key to keeping your energy up.
- Wear Comfortable Shoes: You’ll be walking a lot, so prioritize comfort.
- Bring a Backpack: It’s a lifesaver for carrying all your purchases without straining your arms.
Itinerary Overview
I’ve developed a routine that helps me make the most of my time at the show while staying organized. Here’s a breakdown of my typical schedule:
Day One
Morning
- Drive from Flagstaff to Tucson: I start early to maximize my first day at the show.
- Kino Show: This is my first stop, where I dive into a wide selection of gems, minerals, and unique finds. It’s a great way to ease into the event.
Afternoon
- Jogs: Focused on beads, cabochons, and turquoise. Jogs is known for its high-quality offerings and variety.
Day Two
Morning and Afternoon These three locations are all within walking distance, making it easy to explore them efficiently:
- Motel 6: A smaller venue with a curated selection of vendors.
- Pueblo: A fantastic spot for tools, turquoise, and sterling opal. I will spend the most time at this show.
- 22nd Street Show: Offers a bit of everything, perfect for inspiration and unique finds.
Pro Tip: There is a paid parking area for the gem show behind Motel 6 for convenient access to all three locations.
Day Three
Morning
- G&LW Holidome: Known for chains, beads, and other jewelry essentials. It’s a large venue, so plan your time wisely to cover as much ground as possible.
Afternoon
- Take photos: Photograph jewelry in the beautiful desert landscape.
- Drive back to Flagstaff: After a productive trip, I head home with all my new materials and ideas for future projects.
- Log your gems right away: When I get home I will take photos of all my gems. In each photo I include who I bought the gem from, how much it cost, the name of the gemstone, and any other info I have about it.
